The Cobbler and the Banker

A cobbler passed his time in singing from morning till night;it was wonderful to see, wonderful to hear him;he was more contented in shoes, than was any of the seven sages.his neighbor,on the contrary, who was rolling in wealth, sung but little and slept less.he was a banker;when by chance he fell into a doze at day-break,the cobbler awoke him with his song.the banker complained sadly that providence had not made sleep a saleable commodity, like edibles or drinkables.having at length sent for the songster,he said to him,"how much a year do you earn, master gregory?" "how much a year, sir?"said the merry cobbler laughing,"i have reckon in that way, living as i do from one day to another;somehow i manage to reach the end of the year;each day brings its meal." "well then!how much a day do you earn,my friend?""sometimes more, sometimes less;but the worst of it is,-and,without that our earnings would be very tolerable,-a number of days occur in the year on which we are forbidden to work;and the curate, moreover,is constantly adding some new saint to the list."

The banker, laughing at his simplicity, said,"in the future i shall place you above want.take this hundred crowns, preserve them carefully, and make use of them in time of need."the cobbler fancied he beheld all the wealth which the earth had produced in the past century for the use of mankind.returning home,he buried his money and his happiness at the same time,no more singin;he lost his voice, the moment he acquired that which is the source of so much grief.sleep quitted his dwelling;and cares, suspicions, and false alarms took its place, all day,his eye wandered in the direction of his treasure;and at night,if some stray cat made a noise, the cat was robbing him.at length the poor man ran to the house of his rich neighbor;"give me back." said he,"sleep and my voice, and take your hundred crowns."

The wind and the sun

The wind and the sun were disputing who was the stronger.

Suddenly they saw a traveler coming down the road. The sun said, "Whoever can make the traveler take off his coat will be the stronger."

So the sun hid behind a cloud, and the wind began to blow as hard as it could. As the wind blew harder, the traveler wrapped his coat more closely around himself.

Then the sun came out. He shone on the traveler. The traveler soon felt quite hot, and took off his coat.

①Our manager nodded to express his approval.

  ②Our manager nodded approval.

①Bridegroom and bride bowed to their parents.

②Bride and bridegroom bowed to their parents.

Care and compassion symbolize Men of Our Time.

If you thought sports stars Yao Ming and Liu Xiang or Internet entrepreneurs Zhang Chaoyang and Ding Lei would automatically be on the list of the "Men of Our Time", then you could be, well, behind the times.

The surprise in the list of 10 men released by the All-China Women's Federation yesterday is that it contains no celebrities - and the guiding factors seem to be care and compassion for the opposite sex.

Making the cut are a gynaecologist who made scientific breakthroughs, a pharmacist who helps protects prostitutes from HIV/AIDS, a policeman who rescues women from forced marriages and an official who runs a shelter for wives driven out of their homes.

In fact, Liu and Yao, as well as actor Pu Cunxin - the image ambassador for China's anti-HIV/AIDS campaign - appeared in a pamphlet distributed at the contest's launch ceremony in January. The federation wouldn't say why they are not in the final list.

The winners, with an average age of 47.5, were selected by women officials and journalists of the nine women's newspapers in China, whose criteria was men promoting gender equality.

Li Zhonghua, a 46-year-old airforce officer who test-flies planes, said he thought he was chosen because "he takes good care of his family, and is a gentleman".

"Gentlemen get more respect in our society. They should be like those in the movie Titanic, who let women and children leave first in life rafts," he told China Daily.

Shi Huashan, a 48-year-old policeman in Guixi of Jiangxi Province, said that he became a "man in the eyes of women" because "women love stories of heroes saving beauties".

His team has rescued more than 180 women who were abducted and sold as wives in the mountain regions of Fujian Province.

Li Jianhua, a 52-year-old pharmacist in Kunming of Yunnan Province, emphasized that sex workers should be treated equally and with respect to fight HIV/AIDS. "If you consider yourself above them, they will never trust you," he said.

The other "Men of Our Time" are:

  Lang Jinghe, 67, gynaecologist at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital in Beijing, who has made breakthroughs in ovarian cancer;

  Ma Li, 33, official in Xuzhou of Jiangsu Province, whose shelter has helped 196 victims of domestic violence;

  Li Mingshun, 43, lawyer in Beijing, who is active in campaigns against family violence;

  Liu Ri, 51, a mine worker in Lu'an of Shanxi Province, who took care of his paralyzed parents-in-law for 23 years with his wife;

  Tian Hui, 36, doctor in Baoji of Shaanxi Province, who took care of the family when his wife was abroad on UN peacekeeping duty;

  Han Wei, 51, entrepreneur in Dalian of Liaoning Province, who started a successful business with his wife from feeding chickens;

Fu Shenglong, 45, entrepreneur in Loudi of Hunan Province, who employs about 200 laid-off women workers.

When a man loves a woman

My friend John McHugh is always telling me things, things that younger men need wiser, older men to tell them. Things like whom to trust, how to love, how to live a good life.

Not long ago John lost his wife, Janet, to cancer. God knows she was a fighter, but in the end the disease won their eight-year battle.

One day John pulled a folded paper from his wallet. He’d found it, he told me, while going through drawers in his house. It was a love note, in Janet’s handwriting. It looked a little like a schoolgirl’s daydream note about the boy across the way. All that was missing was a hand-drawn heart and the names John and Janet. Except this note was written by the mother of seven children, a woman who had begun the battle for her life, and very probably was within months of the end.

It was also a wonderful prescription for holding a marriage together. This is how Janet McHugh’s note about her husband begins:” Loved. Cared. Worried. ”

As quick with a joke an John is, apparently he didn’t joke with his wife about cancer. He’d come home, and she’d be in one of the moods cancer patients get lost in, and he’d have her in the car faster than you can say DiNardo’s, her favorite restaurant. “Get in the car,” he’d say,” I’m taking you out to dinner.”

He worried, and she knew it. You don’t hide things from someone who knows better.

“Helped me when I was sick.” is next. Maybe Janet wrote her list when the cancer was in one of those horrible and wonderful remission periods, when all is as it was—almost—before the disease, so what harm is there in hoping that it’s behind you, maybe for good?

“Forgave me for a lot of things.”

  “Stood by me.”

And then, good service to those of us who think giving constructive criticism is our religious calling: “Always complimentary.”

“Provide everything I ever needed.” Janet McHugh next wrote.

Then she’d turned the man she had lived with and been in love with for the majority of her life. She’d written:” Always there when I needed you.”

The last thing she wrote sums up all the others. I can picture her adding it thoughtfully to her list. ”Good friend.”

I stand beside John now, unable even to pretend that I know what it feels like to lose someone so close. I need to hear what he has to say, much more than he needs to talk.

“John,” I ask,” how do you stick by someone through 38 years of marriage. “let done the sickness too? How do I know I’d have what it takes to stand by my wife if she got sick?”

“you will,” he says. ”If you love her enough, you will.”

  1. It's cool.

(可指人或事物)也就是 something good or acceptable;situation is under control;being calm, gentle, courteous or good-looking;meet teen's standard.

  That's cool;he is cool;this is cool.

  Skydiving (或surfing) is cool.(跳伞或冲浪运动很不错)

主词可用任何人称的单复数 (I, we, they 等),动词可用 verb to be 的任何时态 (is, was, were, will be, have been等)。

She (He) was cool in the past.

  That's a cool T-shirt.(好看的运动衫)

He (she) is a cool person.(文雅礼貌的人)

  但是如果说:Are you cool?

She looks as cool as a cucumber. 又是恭维语,是说她很 calm and charming; not

  emotional.

  2. Are you trippin'?

这个字是现在分词当形容词用,是指行为异乎寻常,也许受到吸毒或喝酒的影响,而显得神魂颠倒、奇形怪状(to get high on drug such as LSD),也就是说:要不是受到药、酒的影响,你为什 显得这样古怪呢?(Are you under any influence of drug or alcoholic? Why are you so crazy and bizarre?)

  They are trippin'. (= tripping)

  She (he) is trippin'.

  Mr. A must be trippin'.

  3. He is a nerd

(A person always buries his nose in books, but not good at social situations.) (IQ = Intelligence Quotient ; EQ = Emotional Quotient) nerd 可用复数,动词也能用其他时态。

He used to be a nerd in high school

  4. Yo baby

(He thinks she is pretty and attractive, so he wants to speak to her.),也就是找话题,想要「打开话匣」。(to use as a form of opening line or pick-up line or to begin a greeting; try to know her or date her) 如果说:

Yo baby, are you trippin'?

May I help you with something? I think I have met you somewhere before.

Hey, hey, hey, what's going on?“what is going on?”就是年轻黑人打招呼的用语 (a form of greeting or open statement) 或 Hey, hey, hey, are you going to the movie?(帅哥,你是去看电影吗?)

 5. She is a ho

(a girl or woman gives sex freely without charge),也就是说:She is very loose. 或 She is a loose woman (girl)。

  They are (were) hos.

There are quite a few hos in high schools. (a girl or woman is paid for sex.)

  6. Catch you later!

(a form to say“good乡bye”) 也就是说:现在没有时间与你交谈,以後再谈吧!(I don't have time to talk with you now, but we can talk later.) catch 後面,也可用其他人称代名词(him, her, them 等)

有时年轻小伙子也用:I am off. I am leaving now; I'll talk to you again.

Mike can't build the model of the atom for the science project. He's all thumbs.

你就可以说“I'm sorry I'm late.” Are you all right?”

I'm sorry to hear of your precious cat's death.

Jenny: Excuse me. Could you please tell me the way to the post office?

Woman: Oh. Go down this way and turn left at the second crossing. You can see it on your left.

  Jenny: Thank you!

Jenny: Excuse me, but I have to go home now.

  Annie: See you tomorrow!

Jenny: Excuse me. Can I sit here?

  Man: Sure.
