Asian equities moved higher yesterday, led by a strong performance in Hong Kong, but momentum slowed after losses suffered on Wall Street overnight.

The Hang Seng index jumped 1.3 per cent to 21,954.67 as speculation rose that Beijing would extend its Qualified Domestic Institutional Investor (QDII) legislation to include all financial institutions.

On Wednesday, Chinese securities regulators issued new rules allowing fund managers and brokerages to invest abroad. Before this, only mainland banks and selected fund managers were able to invest client money overseas under the QDII scheme.
