BANK OF CHINA SHARES PLUNGE AFTER TEMASEK CUTS HOLDING

Shares in Bank of China fell more than 9 per cent during trading yesterday as investors took fright after Temasek, the Singaporean state investment agency, trimmed its shareholding in the mainland Chinese lender.

Temasek, the bank's second largest foreign shareholder, said the disposal of $567m worth of Hong Kong-listed H-shares formed part of its “active portfolio management”.

The statement helped calm market speculation that the sale was linked to worries over the Chinese bank's exposure to US subprime mortgages. However, Bank of China shares closed down 5.2 per cent compared with a 1.5 per cent fall in Hong Kong's Hang Seng index.

中国银行(Bank of China) H股股价昨日盘中一度下跌超过9%，原因是新加坡政府投资机构淡马锡(Temasek)减持这家中国内地银行的股份，引发了投资者的恐慌。

身为中国银行第二大外资股东的淡马锡称，减持价值5.67亿美元的中国银行H股，是其“积极投资组合管理”策略的一部分。

这份声明帮助平息了市场的猜测。投资者此前以为，淡马锡的减持行动与该公司担心中行在美国次级抵押贷款方面的风险敞口有关。不过，中国银行H股昨日收盘仍下跌5.2%，而香港恒生指数仅下跌1.5%。
