Smarter Drugs----更聪明的药


  Historians often regard the latter part of the 19th century as a time of great "flowering" in the evolution of medicine. New insights in to how germs affect the human body, as well as advancements in microscopy, led scientists to discover the root causes for a multitude of infectious diseases.

    Now medicine is on the threshold of a second renaissance, and the discoveries of this period may lead to a revolution in the treatment of everything from heart disease to cancer. The field is known as pharmaco-genetics and the mission is to design drugs that are targeted to a patient's genetic profile. Though still in its infancy, the field has made critical steps in the battle against some cancers, and show great potential for improving the overall effectiveness of all drugs.

Breaking the Mold  打破窠臼

    Drug companies have an especially keen interest in personalized medicine. The current model of prescribing one big-name drug to millions upon millions of patients has proven ineffective, and sometimes deadly.

    Drug-maker Merck and Co. knows the dangers of the blockbuster drug model all too well. One of their products-the painkiller Vioxx-was shown to increase the risk of blood clots in a very small number of patients. As a result, a jury recently returned a $253 million verdict against the company for the death of a patient who had been taking Vioxx. And this was only the first of many lawsuits.

    Right now, scientists know very little about how human genes are linked to drug side effects. Pharmacogenetics seeks to change all that. Someday all patients may undergogenetic screening. They can then be divided into different categories based on those test. Doctors will be able to take a genttic profile and immediately know which drugs are safe to prescribe, and which ones are not. Drugs won't be hand-crafted fro every patient, but rather prescribed to different populations determined by their genetic subsets.

　What I saw was a great opportunity to provide computing technology in a more efficient way. That was the core idea of what became dell computer Corporation, and that’s one we were stuck over ever since.

　　In early May, about a week before I took my final exam to complete my freshman year, I incorporated the company as “Dell Computer Corporation”, doing business as “PC’s Limited”. we moved the business from my condo to a 1000-square-foot office space in a small business center in North Austin. I hired a few people to take orders over telephone and a few more to fulfill them. Manufacturing consisted of three guys with screwdivers sitting at six-foot tables upgrading machines. Business continued to grow, and I began to think of what the potential could be if I could devote myself to the venture, full- time.

　　Oh, to be free like a bird. It's been the stuff of fantacy, and of reality. Sort of .A self-contained flying man. This jet pack from 1960s had barely enough fuel to fly 30 seconds. So the dream languished for decades. Everyone agreed it was completely impractical , except Micheal Moshier.

　　Moshier, a former Navy-pilot-turned-entrepreneur, has spent the last five years of his life working secretly on a tiny twin blade strap helicopter called The Solotrek.

　　With a little more work, he says, the machine will zip around the treetops at 80mph, stabilized by computer. He can picture the army using it to get over rugged terrain, police on search and rescue missions,and if an occasional daredevil wants to beats traffic, well, Moshier believes a pilot who can walk and chew gum with minimal training should be able to get on the aircraft suitably. There’s just this one nagging question, the machine will fly, but will the idea? True , Moshier has help from the Defense Department and from NASA, but won’t the machine be noisy or dangerous or hard to park?

    "Egg Donor Needed. $50,000 Incentive." This is a sample heading from one of the ads that has begun to appear at Ivy League schools such as Yale and Harvard. Although egg donation is not news, those intending to purchase human eggs have now gone beyond requesting a certain eye color to demanding Ivy League degrees. These potential buyers believe that raising the standard of their criteria will bring them a better baby. But does this ambition to purchase a genetic advantage for their children make them bad parents?

    Couples who place these ads assume that if a young woman attends an Ivy League school, then she will likely pass on her academic ability to her offspring. This assumption disregards many other factors such as the genetic contribution of the sperm and the determining forces of our environment. Our lives are influenced, but not predetermined by our genes.

    刊登这则广告的夫妇认为，能读常春藤盟校的女生，很有可能将其在学术上的优秀能力遗传给后代。这种假设忽视了许多其他的因素，如精子遗传和后天环境的决定性影响。我们的人生会受到遗传基因的影响，但并不是完全由它决定的。

    One danger of ordering babies like televisions is that parents may have unreasonable expectations of their child. If the child doesn't turn out the way the parents envisioned, how will he or she be treated? Good parents accept their children for whoever they happen to be—not just for attending Yale.

　　“everything happens for the best,”my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."

　　Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932.I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time.

The rabbits who cause all the trouble----肇事的兔子



　　Within the memory of the youngest child there was a family of rabbits who lived behind a pack of wolves. The wolves announced that they did not like the way the rabbits were living.The wolves were crazy about the way they themselves were 1iving,because it was the only way to live.

　　在最小的孩子还记得的那个时候,在狼群的附近居住着兔子一家。狼们公开宣布,他们不喜欢兔子的生活方式。狼对自己的生活方式推崇备至,因为这是唯一可行的生活方式。

　　One night several wolves were killed in an earthquake and this was blamed on the rabbits, for it is well known that rabbits pound on the ground with their hind legs and cause earthquakes. On another night one of the wolves was killed by a bolt of lightning and this was also named on the rabbits, for it is well known that lettuce-eaters cause 1ightning.The wolves threatened to civilize the rabbits if they didn't behave.

　　一天晚上,几只狼在地震中死亡。这件事是兔子的责任,因为众所周知,兔子用两条腿蹬地造成了地震。另一个晚上,一只狼被雷电劈毙,这件事也怪罪于兔子,因为众所周知,雷电是由吃莴苣的动物引发的。狼威胁说,如果兔子继续为非作歹,它们将施以管教。

　　The rabbits decided to move away to a desert island. But the animals, who lived at a great distance, shamed them, saying, "You must stay where you are and be brave. There is no world for escapists. If the wolves attack you, we will come to your aid all probability." So the rabbits continued to live near the wolves.

　　兔子决定逃到一个荒岛上去。但是其它住在远处的动物奚落它们说:"你们必须守住阵脚,要勇敢。这个世界决没有逃避主义者的容身之地。如果狼攻击你们,我们多半会来相助。"于是兔子继续在狼群附近生活。

　　One day them was a terrible flood which drowned a great many wolves. This was blamed on the rabbits, for it is well known that carrot-nibblers with long ear cause floods. The wolves descended on the rabbits, for their own good, and imprisoned them in a dark cave, for their own protection.

　　有一天,发生了一场可怕的洪水,许多狼被淹死。责任怪罪到兔子头上,因为众所周知,长耳朵并小口小口吃胡萝卜的动物会引起洪水。为了兔子着想,狼对它们下手了,把它们关在黑洞里进行保护。

　　When nothing was heard about the rabbits for some weeks, the other animals demands to know what had happened to them. The wolves replied that the rabbits had been eaten and since they had been eaten the affair was a purely internal matter. But the other animals warned that they might possibly unite against the wolves unless some reason was given for the destruction of the rabbits. So the wolves gave them one. “They were trying to escape,” said the wolves, "and, as you know, there is no world for escapists."   

　　由于连续几星期没有听到兔子的消息,其它动物要求知道它们的行踪。狼回答说兔子已经被吃了;既然已经吃到肚里,此事就纯属内政。但其它动物警告说,除非有消灭兔子的正当理由,不然它们可能团结起来,一致对狼。于是,狼给了它们一条理由。"它们企图逃走",狼说。"你们也知道,这个世界决没有逃避主义者的容身之地。”

　　2:00 a.m. in the Arabian desert, the world’s fifth richest man sits alone. A rare moment of tranquility. Who is this man? What is he thinking? Why is he here?

　　He is His Royal Highness Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, nephew of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, grandson of the country’s founder, grandson also of the founder of modern day Lebanon. Just 44 years old, his net worth tops $20 billion.

　　Mostly he lives here in a 460,000 square-foot palace he calls home. Quaint, it isn’t？ It’s 317 rooms, include 18 sitting rooms, 15 dinning rooms, 10 bedrooms, 16 pantries, and one dozen elevators. The garage is big, too. It has to be to accommodate the Prince’s hundreds of cars. And this is the Prince’s kitchen – a 30,000 – square – foot facility with enough staff and equipment to feed more than a 1,000 people on any given day. And that’s on top of 20 smaller kitchens scattered throughout the palace. The Prince’s bedroom is large, but his closet is larger. Among other things, it holds his 3,000 pairs of shoes, and hundreds of pairs of sunglasses.

　　Prince: No I don’t think… I live happily. Now, maybe to some people, it’s lavish, I would acknowledge that, but to me, I live happily.

　　Prince: I believe that we have a mission, you know, to tell the western world held by America for sure, is that the Arabs are good businessmen, good honorable people. And if I can contribute in having the image being better and enhanced, of course being more positive in America, I would be more than happy to do it.
