TAIWAN RAISES BANK RATE

Taiwan's central bank yesterday stepped up the pace of monetary tightening, raising its benchmark discount rate by 25 basis points to a 5?-year high. .

The measures, reiterating Taipei's determination to stem capital outflows, follow efforts by the Central Bank of China (Taiwan) to keep the Taiwan dollar from weakening beyond T$33 to the US dollar. Since late May it has done this through stepped-up intervention in the currency market and moves to slow approvals for foreign funds seeking to raise money in Taiwan.

台湾央行昨日加快了收紧货币政策的步伐，将基准贴现率调高25个基点，至5年半来最高水平。

此举再次体现了台湾政府阻止资本外流的决心。此前，台湾央行一直在努力阻止新台币汇率跌至33元新台币兑1美元以下。为达到这一目的，自5月底以来，台湾央行加紧了对外汇市场的干预，并放慢了对寻求在台湾募集资金的外国基金的审批速度。
