Love conquered cancers 爱情的力量征服了癌症
The first time James Quill was told he had canner, he was stoic. The second time doctors gave him that diagnosis, he received the bad news quietly. The third time, he broke down in tears. The prospect of losing his life had suddenly become more terrifying because he had fallen in love -- with the woman who had nursed him back to health just a couple of years earlier.

Tragedy hits a teen
James grew up in Wilmington, Del. In 1983, when he was 17, he noticed a swelling in his upper thigh. The diagnosis was a form of cancer called non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma. His large lrish-Catholic family, determined to get James the best care possible, packed up and traveled to New York`s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer center, where Dr. Norma Wollner took charge.
少年时遭遇不幸

The treatment was effective and caused the cancer to retreat. James eventually returned to school, feeling he had beaten cancer for good.

Bad news again
After finishing school, James moved to New York and worked as a bartender while trying to make it as an actor. In 1989, six years after his first diagnosis, James went for a regular checkup with Wollner. She found more cancer.

The second cancer nearly cost James his life. During a rigorous chemotherapy regimen, he went into shock with blood poisoning. Then, on a Sunday in October, he had a massive heart attack.
第二次癌症差点要了他的命。在一次要求严格的化疗疗程中，他陷入血中毒引起的休克。十月的一个星期天，又出现大面积心肌梗塞。
James didn`t die, but his condition remained very unstable. While the Quills camped out in a waiting room, the family caught the attention and sympathy of a nurse named Laura Danis who had been caring for James since the heart attack. Incredibly, James and Dr. Wollner beat the cancer a second time and, by late spring of the next year, he had returned to his life in New York. But now he was not alone. James and Laura had started dating.

New motive to live
The relationship progressed, though James says he was wary about getting involved with his nurse when his health could take another turn for the worse. But she was hooked. And so was James. In the midst of his euphoria over a blossoming relationship, Dr.Wollner once again gave James some devastating news. He had a third cancer, this time in his thyroid gland.
活下去的新动力
尽管詹姆斯说自己的身体情况还可能出现反复，与劳拉陷入亲密关系有顾虑，但劳拉和詹姆斯互相被对方迷住了，他们的关系仍在发展。正当两人坠入爱河之时，渥尔讷医生再一次传出令人泄气的消息：他又患上了新癌症，这一次，是他的甲状腺。
Wollner says this was the only time she ever saw James cry. "I think he cried decause... now he had a different motive to live." Now he had someone to live for. But Wollner promised James he would survive. James, then 27, had the operation with Laura beside him. And within a few months, he was well enough that the couple was back to one of their favorite activities, jogging together in New York`s Central Park.

New family
One day when they were jogging, James asked Laura to marry him and Laura accepted.

One of the fist people they told was Dr. Wollner. She was happy, but informed them that the radiation and chemotherapy had almost certainly left James sterile. However, Laura was not deterred. Once again, James Quill had defied expectations. As it turned out, Laura was pregnant. On June 27, 1996, Andrew James Quill was born. Four years later Laura gave birth to a daughter.

The family now lives in San Francisco, where James is an airline supervisor and Laura is still a nurse. James has been cancer-free for nine years.
